Melbourne
A conference for youth workers, young people, educators,
policy-makers, academics and researchers, and for anyone
interested in youth affairs in Australia. International
insights and comparative perspecitives are very welcome!
Hosted by the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria in partnership
with Australia's other State and Territory non-government
youth affairs peak bodies, and supported by the Department
of Victorian Communities, Victorian State Government. Theme:
Are we there yet: past learnings, current realities, future
directions. The conference will cover several themes including
Youth Participation, Mental Health and Employment, Education
and Training. Call for abstracts: 18 September 2006. Abstracts
for research-based papers close 15 November 2006.
Full papers submitted for peer-refereeing on 7 February
2007. Early-bird registrations: January-February 2007, registrations

and Fish - article about the Durban conference
written by Ani Wierenga, Vice President
for Australia, New Zealand and Oceania: This
South Africa visit was for the International Sociological
Association Conference. I heard that about 4000 of us descended
on Durban for the conference. Thankfully the youth research
strand (Research Committee 34) is a little smaller than
that (I think we have 133 members from 43 countries - many
of whom attended) and like other research committees this
one had a 6 day internal program of its own with a solid
membership and collegial core group. Like others I co-chaired
some session and gave a paper. And then we disbanded by
8.30 every night and usually re-convened at a nice little
watering hole at the docklands called 'Cafe Fish' ...
